BILLED
How it works

Every day brings a choice. Most of the time you won't know the price until the bill comes. If your health runs out, your money runs out, or you get three strikes at work, the month ends early. On a keyboard, press a number to choose.

About this game

BILLED is a game about medical debt and hidden prices in American health care. Pick one of five people: an uninsured delivery driver, a server and single mom on a Bronze plan, an executive with good insurance, a small business owner with diabetes, or a retiree on Medicare. Same MRI, same ER visit, same cavity. Five different bills.

It's modeled on SPENT, the 2011 game about poverty made for Urban Ministries of Durham. Like SPENT, asking friends for help means actually asking them.

The people are made up. Prices are made up but realistic. Insurance math follows real deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket rules, and every "Did you know" fact links to its source.

Want real prices? Costnip shows what people actually paid for care, and you can add what you paid.

Not medical, legal or financial advice.
